The Erimus Stone

A memorial wall, unveiled on 22/7/2006 ,commemorates six Thornaby servicemen who gave their lives during World War One.

Thornaby Town Council and Stockton Council have created the wall at Acklam Road Cemetery,Thornaby as the permanent location for a monument known as the "Erimus Stone".

The stone was originally erected in 1920 in Erimus Terrace to commemorate six men from the terrace who died between 1915 and 1918.

Councillor Pat Large, Mayor of Thornaby, said: "This memorial wall is a fitting final resting place for the Erimus Stone and will allow people to pay respect to these men who sacrificed their lives for their country."

Alderman Ken Craggs unveilled the stone at the war grave in Thornaby Cemetery on Acklam Road on Saturday, July 22 2006.

Construction of the memorial wall was made possible thanks to contributions from Thornaby Town Council and Stockton Council. Historical research, and selection of the final location of the memorial was undertaken by the current and former ward Councillors.
